Avon Senior Center

Every Tuesday and Thursday we send 4 or 5 volunteers over to the Avon Senior Center. These volunteers work from 11 to 1:30 helping the Senior Center staff serve lunch. Every Tuesday and Thursday the Senior Center offers a hot lunch to senior citizens, and it gives them a time to get out of the house and talk to friends. Volunteers also help with odd jobs around the Senior Center, such as moving furniture and heavy objects that could not be moved without our help. In the past volunteers have also organized magazines, cleaned tables, and in 2009 helped put together a slide show of pictures to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Food Drives

About three times each summer on the weekends, we hold food drives in front of major supermarkets to help give back to the needy at the Immaculate Conception Food Shelter in Hartford. We usually work from 9 to 1, doing two shifts, one from 9 to 11 and one from 11 to 1. We ask shoppers to donate a select list of food, or to give some money. We ask for items to make a meal for the men at the shelter, and each time we do this, we need families to help us out by cooking part of the meal. We then go on Monday night to the shelter to cook up and serve the meal. This is a very rewarding experience and helps establish a sense of giving back to the community.
